  • The Mountains Within Us ~ Reception WAS A SUCCESS!
The Mountains Within Us ~ Reception WAS A SUCCESS!

The evening was soooo well attended and two pieces of Epstein’s were sold. Stop by to see her collection still hanging.

Epstein’s versatility and talent is showcased in “The Mountains Within Us” in her mountain landscape large format paintings, pigment visual imagery and bronze work. Her work connects us to the mountains and the earth, opening us to the power of nature within and around us.

Stop by to see her work and enjoy some time with fellow art lovers alike!  Look forward to seeing you at Creighton Block Gallery.

Epstein’s Earthscapes harken from the West as well, yet come from the arid land of Arizona and Utah.  The hues are natural pigment reminiscent of the substrate used in petroglyph cave paintings by Native Americans as well as the ground pigments of the Impressionists.  These paintings remind us of our home the earth, yet lead us to dream of the heavens.

  • Inaugural Big Sky Art Auction a SUCCESS and to be continued …
Inaugural Big Sky Art Auction a SUCCESS and to be continued …

    By Sarah Gianelli EBS Contributor

Out of 41 works of art presented at the first annual Big Sky Art Auction, 30 pieces sold from $1,000 to $25,000 per piece, deeming it an undeniable success in the Western art auction world.

The event was co-hosted by Creighton Block Gallery and Outlaw Partners (publisher of EBS) and held on Thursday, July 28, as a kick-off to the Big Sky PBR. While final numbers weren’t available at press time, organizers said $20,000 to $24,000 was raised for the nonprofit beneficiaries, Spanish Peaks and Moonlight community foundations.

“We were thrilled with the results,” said John Haas, founder and president of Spanish Peaks Community Foundation. “The auction was a great opportunity for the foundation to raise more funds to give back to the local Big Sky community.”

In recent years the two foundations have provided financial support for local entities such as the Gallatin River Task Force, Big Sky School District, Warren Miller Performing Arts Center, and the Big Sky Community Organization, among many others.

The fundraising effort was in large part due to the caliber of artists featured.

“We sold two R. Tom Gilleon portraits, the only living artist the C.M. Russell Museum has ever done a retrospective for,” said Colin Mathews, owner of Creighton Block Gallery. “That alone marks the Big Sky Art Auction as one that artists and collectors will take seriously and regard with great promise in the years to come.”

Preferring to remain anonymous, the individual who went home with the two Gilleons (each with a base bidding price in the $20,000 range), as well as “Madison Horses, 1991” by Theodore Waddell and a seascape by Frank Hagel, enjoyed the auction immensely.

“It will make my bidding more difficult,” she said, “but I hope it becomes a yearly event that grows in years to come.”

Big Sky resident Howard Schutte acquired Oleg Stavrosky’s “The Plains Veteran” and “Arrowhead,” a bronze sculpture of a falcon by esteemed artist Greg Woodward.

“It was a highlight of our weekend and a great kick-off to the PBR weekend,” said Schutte. “Our friends Chris and Kenyon Carter are here from Atlanta. This was their first art auction and thought it was fabulous. They can’t wait to come back!”

New to the Gallery ~ Ewoud DeGroot

“To me, as an artist, producing a good painting is about exploring all the different facets of composition, colour and technique and not just reproducing an image in a photorealistic way. Although I consider myself a figurative painter, I always try to find that essential balance between the abstract form and the realism of the subject. You could say that I am on the frontier between figurative and non-figurative, or the traditional and the modern.”  THIS PAINTING IS SOLD.

Come see new art! Lexi Sundell is in the house.

The creative process makes the difference between living and dying, a fact that artist Lexi Sundell experienced in her own life and sees in the lives of others.  An internationally known artist, she teaches workshops to foster the creative process, often through painting in acrylics. Creative consciousness was the subject of her 2014 TedX Whitefish talk.  She was mostly known for her floral paintings until an unusual dream about a dangerous black panther in her kitchen provoked a sharp left turn in her painting.  As a result, her current body of work features animals and birds as totems for the human spirit.  A respected expert in acrylics, she applies multiple layers of paint and texture, often on large canvases, to achieve her distinctively rich colors in paint.

Drop by Creighton Block Contemporary Gallery to see her works.

  • “Freedom” Lands in Big Sky
    “Freedom” Lands in Big Sky

Freedom (watch video of it’s creation), a life-size bronze sculpture by Greg Woodard represents the connection of Native American and his horse. As we know, there was a time prior to the white man when the Native Americans were free from the perils of Western Expansion.  Yet the dichotomy is that white man inadvertently introduced horses to their cultures.  Quickly they became a necessity in many different ways; transportation for trade, transportation for nomadic cultures, hunting, battle for others, etc.  Ghost Rider is best described by the artist in one word – freedom.  The artwork shows oneness that the rider feels with his steed; the horse affords him freedom of movement, a larger worldview and to a great extent – freedom of thought.  But more importantly, he has a new association with nature, he can move quickly and ‘unbridled’ by the chains of earth and gravity – he has a spirit of freedom and the freedom of spirit!

Stop in and see this amazing piece or just drive by as it is located out front of CBG 1 in the Town Center, Big Sky.

Freedom (watch video of it's creation), a life-size bronze sculpture by Greg Woodard represents the connection of Native American and his horse. • Furniture Artisan ~ Joseph Cummings
    Furniture Artisan ~ Joseph Cummings

The summer after his first year in architecture school he received his first large order of furniture where he then decided to launch his first business. Joseph sold that business in 2006 in order to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps in the infantry where he did two tours of duty. Upon his return he could not escape his love for making furniture and art. So in September of 2011 he formed another business: Joseph Cummings Furniture Artisan LLC.

To him his shop is a land where exceeding limitations is encouraged. Every time he steps into it, he harnesses creative potential and hones his condition to be patient and focused. He knows that his work is a direct reflection of his own condition and this is what he loves about his work—that it not only allows him to become a better person; it commands it. With Joseph as the subject, his work as the object, the only thing that comes between them is quality. Between subject and object is quality; because quality is not an end result, it is a state of mind. This is the state of mind that Joseph approaches every piece of unique heirloom quality, customized furniture that he makes.

    Charles Ringer Kinetic Sculpture!

It moves and oh so gracefully. Once you start a Ringer Kinetic sculpture it will keep you captivated! Stop in the Galley and see what he brought from his studio in Joliet, MT.

For as long as I can remember I have been intrigued by the physics of life around me. As a child in Minnesota, I began to arrange and assemble various objects into three dimensional creations. This process enabled me to translate my mental observations into physical reality. As an artist being self-directed has been instrumental in developing my individual technique. The discipline of trial and error has proven to be my best education.

  • New Artist in the CBG House!

New Artist in the CBG House!

    Julie T. Chapman,

I grew up on a small family farm in central Ohio, where we spent summers working in the garden, baling hay, climbing trees, catching butterflies, and hanging laundry outside.  What I wanted most was a horse; alas, it was unrequited love, which probably explains why I drew them obsessively.  I started drawing and have never stopped.

In the 1990s we began exploring American and Canadian wilderness areas, and I began drawing and painting wildlife (at last, something besides horses!). In 2002 I won the Arts for the Parks Grand Prize, which precipitated our move from California to Montana and kicked me in the butt to become a full-time artist (finally!).

Come by the Gallery and see her work.
