FEATURED ARTIST’S STORY ~ John DeMott

End of an Era ~ John DeMott

By the turn of the century, Buffalo Bill Cody was one of the most colorful and well-known figures around the world.   Born William Frederick Cody on February 26, 1847, he earned his nickname by killing 4280 American Bison in eight months.  Bill Comstock also had the nickname and Cody and Comstock competed in a buffalo shooting match over the exclusive right to use the name.  Cody won by killing 69 bison to Comstock’s 48.

From 1868 until 1872, Cody was employed as a scout for the United States Army.  He also hunted and killed bison to supply the Army and the railroad.  In 1872, Cody was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for “gallantry in Action” while serving as a civilian scout.

In December 1872 he joined “The Scouts of the Prairie” one of the original Wild West shows.  The troupe toured for 10 years.  In 1883 Cody founded “Buffalo Bill’s Wild West” in North Platte, Nebraska.  It toured annually throughout the United States and Europe.  Many historical western figures participated in the show, including Annie Oakley and Sitting Bull.

Cody was an advocate for both the Indian Nation and for Woman’s rights throughout his career.  He supported conservation by speaking out against hide hunting and pushing for a hunting season.

Cody died in 1917 of kidney failure and was buried at Lookout Mountain near Golden Colorado.End of an Era _ DeMott

    The Artist’s Stories

To look at art, any art, I always want to know the “story” of why the artist painted the vision before me.  Here I will be sharing some of their “stories”.

Conchita by Paula Pearl:  The procession assembled at the old abandoned train depo and moved forward to the beat of the snare drum.  It snaked through north Bozeman streets, “The Tour of Sheds”, proudly led by the alabaster donkey “Conchita”!
