Kevin Red Star has been awarded the 2018 Governor’s Arts Award. Chosen from more than 100 nominees, he received the lifetime achievement award for visual art from Lt. Gov. Mike Cooney at a ceremony in Helena on Dec. 7.
Red Star was among five other Governor’s Arts Award honorees, including author Rick Bass, who lives in the Yaak Valley of northwest Montana; Missoula-based artist Monte Dolack; visual and traditional Blackfeet artist Jackie Parsons; artist and enrolled member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes Jaune Quick-To-See Smith; and writer and filmmaker Annick Smith, who resides in the Blackfoot River valley.
The award honors outstanding citizens and organizations in Montana whose achievements in the arts, or on behalf of the arts, benefit all Montanans, selected based on artistic excellence and achievement, dedication to Montana, ongoing contributions to the cultural community, and worthiness of statewide recognition.
